It was a hard decision. Big Sis is 3-years-old. I am (wanting to be) a preschool teacher. I am a MAJOR advocate of preschool, I see SO MANY advantages of sending children to preschool! So I never thought I would have such a hard time when it came time to send my own children to preschool.
I am not a homeschooling type of mom. Maybe things will change some day, but as of now, I don’t plan to homeschool. I have no problems with people that choose that, it’s just not for me.
However, this year, getting ready to discuss sending my BABY GIRL to school was difficult for me! The thing is, as is every parent’s child, she’s a smart girl! She has great communication skills and knows a lot of “stuff”. So, when it came right down to it, it was hard to justify spending the money on 3-year-old preschool for her to “learn” the things she already knows. There is still plenty to learn! Don’t get me wrong!! But with the things that she would focus on in the 3-year-old class, we decided that we would work on those at home. She will be going to pre-kinder next year!
Well, two of my very good friends had the same dilemma that we did. And our 3 girls are the same age, and about the same “level”. We all had decided that we would just “work on skills at home” this year. But as all sat down and started to plan how we’d do that, we thought “WOW! This is kind of a lot of work.” In a good way, but geesh. And we were ALL doing ALL the work.
Ding! The light went off! We got together and discussed doing a little Co-Op Preschool at home together! So we set up a daily routine, lesson schedule, and got a book to use for lesson themes and ideas. We have decided that one day a week we would do a 2.5 hour preschool together. Because it’s just the 3 of us and our children, we watch our own Little Ones too. There is a teacher, an assistant, and a child care person. We are rotating homes every 5 weeks. As the host home, you are the teacher. The assistant and child care person is also the same for that 5 weeks. When we switch homes, we switch roles.
So far, this is week 3, things are going really well! The girls are loving it! They are all excited about it and have a blast!
I love that we get some “school” time, but it doesn’t have to be strictly structured. I also love that we help each other with the child care of the others so we don’t have to worry about finding child care while we are teaching/assisting.
The other fun part about it, is that the assistant provides lunch. So we all get to eat together once a week as well! Since I am not only schooling my own child, it really doesn’t feel like homeschooling at all! It just feels like a really small class. I am loving it! And so is Big Sis! We are focusing mostly on Letter Recognition, Number Recognition, Letter Sounds, and Names. Hoping to have them all good and ready for the pre-kinder class next year! All 3 girls are doing so well! It’s fun to see the improvements and things learned even just in these last 3 weeks!
If you have any questions about anything, please ask! I love educating young children! I can not wait to have my own classroom, but while I get to be home with my babies, I am loving educating them and their friends!
