One part of child-rearing that I have always been passionate about is breastfeeding. When I had my first child when I was 20, I pumped for him while he was in the NICU. Then I donated all my milk. I knew that when I had more children, if there was one thing I WOULD do, it’d be breastfeed my children. My goal has always been, and will continue to be for future children, to nurse for 12 months. Big Sis’s last nursing was the night before her first birthday. She was probably ready to be done around 11 months, but I kept her going for that last month. I did pump for her and put it in a sippy cup also. But I just wasn’t quite ready to give up that bonding experience. But, when she turned 1, I was ready to let her be done. She really did wean herself and cut back gradually on her own. Little Man was a different story. He was not ready to give it up at 12 months old. So we kept going for about another month. Part of why he didn’t want to give it up was because he got to nurse all night long. So the first thing I did was cut that out. When he wasn’t getting to nurse all night, he was ready to give it up also. While I miss it (Little Man is 14 months old) for now, I (hope) that there will be children in the future to nurse again! It’s such a wonderful experience! I just love it!
I highly encourage (but never judge a mother who doesn’t) every mother to give it a try! It’s so healthy for the baby! It’s healthy for the mother! It’s a great bonding experience. If your body makes the milk, why not use it? It’s A LOT cheaper than formula!
